Raccoons in Northern Virginia have adpated to living alongside humans very well. Of course a raccoons most descriptive features are their blackish rings aroud their body and the mask they wear on their face. The amount of rings on a raccoon ranges from 5-7 depending on the individual raccoons size. Their length also varies, but is usually between 1 1/2 to 2 feet long, not including their tail. Despite their short legs, they are strong climbers and will find a way to infiltrate your home, more specifically your attic. Raccoons in Northern Virginia want nothing more than your leftovers from your garbage bin and a comforting attic to establish as a den.
Diseases spread by raccoons in the attic or home are rabies, raccoon roundworm, giardia, and leptospirosis. Raccoons are also a host for parasites like ticks, fleas, and mites which can transmit a number of diseases as well.
Raccoons are protected fur-bearing animals and receive additional legal protections as game animals in most states. Live trapping and relocation is not an option in certain situations since it is illegal in some states to transfer and release captive animals in locations other than the original capture site. Only certified wildlife specialists and licensed trappers may remove and dispose of problem raccoons outside of specified seasons. See more of our information on Raccoon Removal.
