High winds can lift and curl shingles by breaking the seal that bonds them together. High winds can tear and remove shingles, leaving the roof deck, underlayment or old shingles from a previous roof exposed to the elements. Areas like the corner and around the perimeter can be susceptible to higher winds, whereas towards the center are not as sensitive. Anywhere the roofing material is even a little bit loose, the wind can get underneath and push it up, causing a chain reaction in pushing the materials further and further with every wind gust. Early intervention is the key, the longer the problem continues the costlier it will be.
Once some insulation is exposed, rain can get in and cause leaks and water damage. The heavier the rainfall, the more damage can occur. If the area is soaked, it will retain moisture for days and inhibit the growth of mold, which can spread throughout the house and can be a serious health hazard. Electrical issues are also a concern.
Hail can leave dents or marks in shingles, dislodging the protective granules that protect against rain and sun. The sun’s ultraviolet light will weaken the exposed spots and make them brittle. Once an area has been exposed to the elements, it can cause even more damage. Shingles expand and contracts and can curl and crack after being weakened by hail.
BIRD DROPPINGS (Guano)
Bird droppings are high in acid and tend to eat away at roofing materials, especially any tar-based system, like asphalt shingles. The guano is high in acid and over time can cause leaks and the weight among other things can eventually cause a roof to collapse.
FLYING DEBRIS AND TREE DAMAGE
High winds can cause flying debris and tree branches can cause substantial damage to a roof. It can cause dents or punctures to the roof, making it easy for critters to enter a home. Leaves, needles, pine cones, and other debris can clog gutters and downspouts and even damage roofs if they get stuck on a roof, causing decay and risking rot and other damages. Roofs that are surrounded by trees can accumulate an overgrowth of moss, which can retain moisture and deteriorate the shingles. Tree sap on a roof can turn into a problem too.
