These Squirrely-Squirrels!

Do I need squirrel control… and what damage can squirrels do in the home?

Squirrels tend to run away and hide from humans and pets. However, they are not shy about taking up residence in your attic, especially during the colder season. Are you hearing noises in the attic? In 2/3 of the cases of squirrels in the attic, there is a litter of 3-5 baby squirrels. Being extremely nimble, they are very hard to catch. Squirrels will tear up insulation to use in their nests, defecate, and make obnoxious noises at night and throughout the day. Squirrels can chew and gnaw on wooden support beams, walls, and electrical wiring. They can cause substantial damage as well disturb the peace in your home. Their nesting sites turn into toxic messes. Clean up of squirrel feces presents a big safety concern. Wearing gloves, mask and following safety practices is very important. Note that a dust mask may provide some protection against dust, molds, and insulation fibers, but does not protect against viruses.

What are flying squirrels?

Northern Flying Squirrels And Southern Flying Squirrels Are The Only Two Native Flying Squirrel Species Found In North America. They Are Both Gray-Brown, But The Northern Flying Squirrel Has Belly Fur That Is Gray At The Base, And For The Southern Flying Squirrel The Belly Fur Is All White. Size Is Another Way To Tell Northern And Southern Flying Squirrels Apart. The Southern Species Is Smaller, About 8 To 10 Inches In Length. Northern Flying Squirrels Are 10 To 12 Inches Long.

Flying Squirrels Might More Appropriately Be Called “Gliding Squirrels” Because They Aren’t Capable Of True Powered Flight That A Bird Or A Bat Can Do. Flying Squirrels Glide. They Have A Special Membrane Between Their Front And Back Legs That Allow Them To Glide Through The Air Between Trees. When A Flying Squirrel Wants To Travel To Another Tree Without Touching The Ground, It Launches Itself From A High Branch And Spreads Out Its Limbs So The Gliding Membrane Is Exposed. It Uses Slight Movements Of The Legs To Steer, And The Tail Acts As A Brake Upon Reaching Its Destination. Flying Squirrels Can Cover More Than 150 Feet In A Single Glide.

You will hear flying squirrels get rowdy in the attic at night and you will hear scratching sounds as they will up and at it beginning their hunt for food.

Do I have flying squirrels

Flying squirrels tend to make noise only in the middle of the night OR early morning as they are nocturnal animals. These types of animals are the most difficult as far as wildlife removal is concerned. You must be patient to be able to get rid of these squirrels.

How do I get squirrels out of the attic?

In most cases, trapping the squirrels is the most effective way.  Flying squirrels require different trapping and are harder to get rid of as stated above. As squirrels are considered wildlife in many states, trapping them may require a special permit. Be sure to check your local trapping laws and legal requirements as they may differ from county to county.  The safest method of removal is to contact a qualified professional to take care of the squirrel problem. Wildlife control specialists are trained to humanely catch and remove animals in the attic including troublesome squirrels and flying squirrels from homes and attics.

What are the most common diseases caused by squirrels?

Lyme, leptospirosis, rabies, and tularemia are diseases they spread. Squirrels are also a host for parasites, like ticks, fleas, and mites which can transmit a number of diseases as well.

What are some preventative measures?

  • Do not feed wildlife (take down bird feeders, or move them to a distant tree)
  • Get your home inspected by a wildlife control specialist
  • Seal entry points (be sure that all wildlife is gone)
